Reminiscent of the geology of California's Yosemite Park, The Crack (1165 ft) is one of the most beautiful hikes I've done in recent years: at its summit, the panorama of the La Cloche mountains and Lake Huron is breathtaking!
What about the rocky passage between the steep quartzite walls forming this famous «Crack»? Wow! an experience well worth the trip.
Reminiscent of the geology of California's Yosemite Park, The Crack (1165 ft) is one of the most beautiful hikes I've done in recent years.
From the parking lot off Highway 637 in the Killarney Provincial Park (south of Sudbury), take The Crack Shortcut trail: this easy, straight and wide route is great for jogging. After 1.5 km, you join the La Cloche Silhouette trail, which you take to the right (north).
About 2 km further on, you'll come to Lake Kakakise. After this stretch of water, the trail becomes steeper and more uneven. Gradually, the vegetation gives way to bare quartzite and the walk gives way to leaps from rock to rock. As you approach the famous «Crack» - which can be discovered one step at a time (like my ex, curiously enough) - the rock formations pile up and the climb in scrambling begins (which I love). The unveiling of the Crack simply amazed me (I'm retaining a lot of double-entendre jokes at the moment).
In all sincerity, this surprise is what made me fall in love with this hike: a unique rocky passage reminiscent of the geology of my hike on the Half Dome (Yosemite Park, California). After this beautiful experience, which I suggest you enjoy every step of the way, you reach the top of the rock formation from where you can see the La Cloche Mountains, Killarney Lake and Lake Superior. Simply marvellous.
Your summit burpees You then retrace your steps back to the parking area. Note: if you continue the trail to the summit, you embark on the 80kms La Cloche Silhouette trail tour, taking between 7 and 10 days to complete. Just sayin’.
Enjoy the ride, and don't hesitate to leave me your impressions of The Crack in the comments section!
